The present study examines the relationship between credit cost and bank efficiency. The samples include commercial banks of eight countries in both Europe and America from 2008 to 2017. This paper also investigates the effect of bank type (wholesale or nonwholesale bank) and bank size on the relationship between credit cost and bank efficiency. Using panel fixed effect model, I found that the increase in credit cost leads to bank inefficiency. In addition, the result confirms that the type of banks has no effect on this relationship. However, larger banks with increasing trend of credit cost do manage cost more efficiently than smaller banks. These findings simply imply that banks which have fewer bad loans and fewer restrictions on how to set aside provision for bad debts become more efficient, thereby enhancing the bank stability and overall performance.
